Gaining Laser Focus in a World of Distraction

In a world where we have so much information and so many programs at our fingertips, it’s only too easy to get distracted. There’s never been a bigger need for us to work smarter in our everyday roles. Finding the focus to work and to attend to projects may seem simple on paper, but putting such techniques into practice can be fairly tricky.

How Can I Obtain Everyday Focus?

Many of us have attempted to achieve focus simply by making it our goal. It’s only too easy to try and block out all of our distractions at once!

However, maybe we’ve been looking at things the wrong way around. Maybe we need to think about identifying those distractions and removing them in turn.

Think about all of the distractions you may have on a daily basis, whether at home or in the workplace.

  •  Internet access
  • Smartphones, apps and other gadgets Minor tasks Everyday chores Everyday temptations

This is just a brief cross-section of some of the things can be distracting you from tackling a task at hand. To be able to obtain complete focus, we need to think about getting all of these little gremlins out of the way as a priority.

That way, we can start to obtain that elusive, laser-sharp level of control. But how can we do that it practice?

Removing Everyday Distractions

Let’s break things down.  From our list of generic distractions above, we’re going to need to think about how to get them out of the way, and fast, if we are to focus on the things that are crucial to us.

So let’s take this step by step.

  • When it comes to gadgets, internet access and anything likely to take your attention away from the task at hand, simply take them out of the equation. You could restrict your own access to certain websites during work time, or you could disable a browser altogether.
  • Place unnecessary distractions such as phones and tablets out of sight and out of mind. Always have a communication channel where necessary, but make sure anything with colorful apps or games is well out of the way.
  • When it comes to minor tasks and chores, you’re going to need to get them out of the way as a priority. If you work from home, get the bigger jobs, the more menial tasks, sorted out so you don’t have them on your mind later on.  Need to do laundry?  Do it now?
  • Similarly, it pays dividends to think about what you’re going to need for the next day. Arrange your clothes, organize your meals and plan everything menial that is likely to come your way in the next 24 to 48 hours.  This way, you can spend less time thinking about everyday concerns and obtain laser focus for your overriding tasks.
  • If you’re likely to be tempted to stray from your work, simply remove as many distractions as you can. Clear your desk.  Get rid of anything that’s likely to take time away from what you need to do.  That can include food and drink, too.  Designate yourself a break or two, but don’t stray by filling up at your desk, or during your tasks.

Laser Focus is Achievable!

In the video above, we take a closer look at how to achieve that elusive laser focus each and every day.  This is just the tip of the iceberg. Think about how you can remove unnecessary distraction and clear up your schedule.  Make way for the things that really matter and dedicate your day to them!
